Attendance Procedures
"You can't achieve your dreams if you don't show up to chase them."
Regular attendance is essential to school success.
Please be familiar with the following policies regarding your student’s attendance.
-
Riverglen Junior High Attendance Policy
At Riverglen Junior High, regular attendance is vital to student success. To ensure your student's records remain accurate and in compliance with district standards, please follow the guidelines below for reporting absences.
How to Excuse an Absence
Parents or guardians may excuse a student’s absence through any of the following three methods:
- Email: Send a message to riverglenattendance@boiseschools.org.
- Phone: Call the 24-hour attendance line at 208-854-5914 and leave a message. If you need to reach the front desk directly for other matters, you may call 208-854-5910.
- ParentSquare: Submit an excuse directly through the ParentSquare App or Website.
Important Policy Deadlines
- 48-Hour Requirement: In accordance with Boise School District Board Policy 3121, all absences must be excused within 48 hours.
- Truancy Notification: If an absence is not excused within this 48-hour window, it will be classified as unexcused, and a truancy may be issued.
- Class Absences: Please note that any student arriving 20 minutes late or more to a class period is considered absent for that period.
-
All absences, either for a partial or entire day, need to be excused by a phone call or a note from a parent/guardian within 48 hours of the absence.
Even though an absence is "excused", it will still count against the student's attendance unless one of the following occurs:- Medical documentation is provided from a health care provider.
- Legal documentation is provided proving required attendance for court appointment.
- A student is placed in house detention.
- A student is participating in a school sponsored activity (i.e., field trips, performances, class competitions, sporting events sanctioned by the district).
- (NOTE: Club sports such as hockey, soccer, and dance, are not sanctioned sports and district policy dictates that they cannot be considered "Activity Absences". )
Extended Absences:
If a student will be absent for three or more consecutive days, a "Pre-Arranged Extended Absence" form should be completed. This form is available in the main office to assist with gathering assignments and notifying teachers in advance.
Class Absences:
- Arriving more than 20 minutes late counts as an absence.
When a student transfers from one school to another within the Boise School District, the student’s attendance and disciplinary records will transfer to the new school. Absences and truancies accumulated in one school will be recorded and counted at the new school.
Parent Notification of Absences will be emailed for 5, 8, and 10 absences. A formal letter will be mailed home at 10 absences. Students are given an Appeal for Loss of Credit Form after receiving their 10th absence in any class and are required to submit their Appeal to their Assistant Principal within 5 school days after receiving it. -
Riverglen Junior High: Official Student Departure Procedures
To maintain a secure environment and ensure student safety, Riverglen Junior High operates as a closed campus. Please adhere to the following protocols regarding student departures during school hours.
Permit to Leave (PTL) Requirement
From the moment a student arrives on campus until the final dismissal bell, they are not permitted to leave the grounds without an official Permit to Leave (PTL). This policy applies to all times of the day, including lunch and passing periods.
Advance Notification
To minimize classroom interruptions and ensure your student is ready for pickup, the front office requires at least one hour of advance notice prior to the departure time. We encourage parents to provide notification as early as possible—either the morning of the absence or the day before.
Methods of Notification
You may notify the front office and request a PTL through the following channels:
- Front Office: (208) 854-5910
- Attendance Line (Direct to Voicemail): (208) 854-5914
- Email: Riverglenattendance@boiseschools.org
- Send a message directly through ParentSquare to : Riverglen Attendance
Late Arrivals and Medical Documentation
- Check-In: Any student arriving late to campus must report directly to the front office to check in before proceeding to class.
- Medical Exemptions: To have an absence marked as "Medically Exempt," please provide a formal note from a healthcare provider. These may be delivered in person or sent via email to the address listed above.
-
Tardies:
Students are expected to be in class when the tardy bell rings. Tardies issued for first period may not be excused by parents. Consequences for being late to class are as follows:
4th Tardy - Parent Notified
5th Tardy - Parent Notified and Student attends Lunch Detention
6th Tardy - Parent Notified and Student Attends Afternoon School (2:30 - 5:00 pm)
7th Tardy - Parent Notified, Student Attends Afternoon School and/or Withdrawal from Class with an “F” Grade Please refer to District Policies #3121 and #3140.
Students arriving at school at any time after the 7:50 am bell should report directly to the office. Any unexcused tardy or absence becomes a truancy after 48 hours.
-
Unexcused Absences/Truancies
At Riverglen, unexcused absences (truancies) are defined as any absence occurring without the consent of a parent or guardian, or any instance where a student leaves campus or a classroom without prior permission from school officials. This includes instances where students remain in common areas, such as hallways or restrooms, to avoid class attendance or bypass tardy procedures.
1st Truancy: Lunch Detention
2nd Truancy:
3rd Truancy:
Please be aware of the following consequences regarding unexcused absences per Idaho Code and BSD Policy:
- Attendance Requirements: Unexcused absences count toward the 90% attendance requirement.
- Academic Impact: Assignments, tests, or projects missed during a truancy may not be eligible for full credit.
- Disciplinary Action: Consistent truancy may lead to disciplinary measures, including suspension or expulsion. For students between the ages of 7 and 16, excessive absences may result in a habitual truancy hearing under Idaho Code 33-207.
- Loss of Credit: Unexcused absences can negatively impact a student’s right to appeal for credit in cases of "extraordinary circumstances."
- Driving Privileges: Per Board Policy 3140 and Idaho Code 49-303A, chronic truancy may be reported to the Idaho Transportation Department, resulting in the suspension of driving privileges.
